CHP use spike strip to stop DUI suspect

SCOTTS VALLEY – Officers caught a fleeing driver on Highway 17 early Wednesday morning by placing a spike strip on the highway near Granite Creek Road, according to California Highway Patrol.

A CHP officer in Santa Clara County suspected a man in a 1977 Ford pickup was driving while intoxicated, and he tried to pull him over. The driver then fled on Highway 17, CHP officer Grant Boles said.

Sergio Montgomery, a transient whose age was not released, drove south on Highway 17 into Santa Cruz County. About 1 a.m., CHP officers placed a spike strip on 17 near Granite Creek Road, causing the tires on the truck to blow out. Montgomery was arrested without incident shortly after the blowout. He was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of DUI, Boles said.

“This was a perfect deployment of the spike strip and why we have them in the cars,” Boles said.
