Man gets 12 years for DUI manslaughter

A Boca Raton man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for backing over a woman, who later died, while he was driving drunk.

A Broward County judge sentenced 54-year-old Richard Plevniak on Thursday. He was convicted last month of DUI manslaughter.

Authorities say Plevniak was backing out of his driveway in November 2008 when he hit 76-year-old Marian Maloney. Unaware of the impact, Plevniak backed his vehicle over the victim until a witness screamed at him to stop.

The woman died from her injuries the next day at a Delray Beach hospital.

Plevniak’s blood alcohol content was recorded to be 0.24 percent. Florida law considers a driver impaired at 0.08 percent.
