Know the law and think before you drink and drive
Bad things can happen to good people, especially when a DUI is involved. The state of California takes driving under the influence of alcohol very seriously, and does not always go light on punishment.
In California, drivers under the age of 21 cannot drive with a blood alcohol content (BAC) or more than 0.01 percent. The BAC limit is 0.08 percent for adults over 21 and 0.04 percent for commercial drivers.
These numbers mean only one or two drinks at happy hour or at a party can put someone over the BAC limit. Penalties for DUI offenses can include:
- Hefty fines up to $1000 plus penalty assessments
- Time in county jail or the state penitentiary
- Installation of a certified ignition interlock device (IID)
- Suspension or revocation of your driver’s license
- Community service
- Attendance of a driving under the influence program

In February 2015, a Texas man with 10 prior DUI convictions was sentenced to two life terms after a 3-hour jury deliberation. He was 64, and could possibly spend his last years in jail.
In another instance related to drunk driving charges, a mother was caught drinking in an Orange County bar while her young children waited in the car. She already had an IID from a prior conviction, and asked her 4-year old to blow into the device in order to start the car. She was arrested at the scene.
In the worst of cases, drunk drivers are involved in accidents that result serious injury and death. In July 2015, a 39-year-old man caused a multi-vehicle collision that killed a 14-year-old and sent two other teenagers to the hospital.
